WarpMap FAQ
General Hints:
The US Census (Tiger Mapping Service) is usually very busy during weekdays,
so use the Xerox Maps to zoom in. When you are close, and want enhanced
detail (currently US only), switch to the US Census mapping service.
Please note that certain features become apparent only when you are
zoomed in (eg. the city of Macon, GA will not be listed until only north/central
Georgia is on the map).
Questions:
-
How can I add myself to the map?
-
If you select the "put me here" radio button, then click on the
map, the next screen will let you enter your personal information, and
fill out the coordinates you clicked on. If you *know* your lat/lon, you
can type the corrdinates in, and you will be added at those cordinates.
-
Why is the World Map updated erratically?
-
Unfortunately, this map is updated by my home machine (not Falcon),
so it depends on my home machine being reliably connected to the net.
Between the Merlin Beta, buggy hardware, and a guy who just pushes the
machine too far, I keep breaking the machine. I am arranging to have a
backup server for this (so I can continue to break my toys ;)
-
Why is this so SLOW?
-
The WarpMap depends on two heavily utilized servers to generate its maps.
These services become swamped during the day (esp. during peak business
hours).
-
Why don't I get any amount of detail when I zoom in?
-
If you are in the United States, you can switch to the US Census mapping
service for increased detail. The Tiger Mapping Service provides detail
down to the street label (unfortunately, it does not yet list street
names).
-
I'm not in the US.... Can you do anything about the lack of detail?
-
Not yet. If you know a site that will generate maps on request for
your region, Email
me.
-
I've forgotten my confirmation code - HELP!
-
Argh! There is currently no other way to check your identity. I
will soon add the ability to re-mail your confirmation code to your recorded
address.
-
After being deleted, I can still access my record - what gives?
-
I just zero out the status field of the record, making you essentially invisible.
Eventually, I will write a program to remove the deleted records.
-
I don't like strangers being able to locate me that precisely.
-
Then put yourself in the middle of a lake, highway, etc. Please make
it relatively (at least in the same town) close so the World Map will be
accurate.
